Description:
An In-Basket is a written exercise that simulates the typical pile of papers/e-mails confronting a manager, for example, on return from a trip or holiday. It is expected of an Assessment or Development Centre candidate/delegate to respond to the papers/e-mails in the way he thinks best (for example: delegate tasks to subordinates; give instructions; etc.).

An In-Basket typically consists of various items eliciting behaviour from the candidate/delegate that can be classified under various competencies assessed during an Assessment or a Development Centre.

Purpose:
The purpose of an In-Basket exercise is to determine a delegate's/candidate's current ability to manage and lead his department's performance on paper so that the department operates productively and that its objectives are met.

Uses:
An In-Basket forms part of either an Assessment Centre or a Development Centre.

The objectives of an Assessment Centre are:

  • To select the most suitable candidate(s) for a position or management-leadership level in an organisation.
  • To determine candidate(s) managerial-leadership potential for various positions/levels.

The Objectives of a Development Centre are:

  • To identify manager-leader development needs.
  • To do management development planning.

Duration:
The normal duration for administering an In-Basket is one-and-a half hours. The normal duration for scoring and interpreting an In-Basket is one hour.

  • Middle Management Level
  • First-Line Management Level
