A Counseling Discussion is an interactive exercise that simulates a typical situation where a manager notices a subordinate's performance problem. The manager calls the subordinate to his/her office to determine the reason for the performance problem and to ensure that future performance is on par.
The Assessment or Development Centre candidate/delegate is put in the position of the manager who has to conduct the discussion with a role-player, playing the role of the subordinate experiencing performance problems.
Purpose:
The purpose of a Counselling Discussion exercise is to determine a candidate/delegate's current ability to conduct a discussion with a subordinate that will motivate the subordinate to improve his/her job performance, so that the delegate/candidate (the manager), the organisation, and the subordinate benefits.

A Counselling Discussion forms part of either an Assessment Centre or a Development Centre:
The Objectives of an Assessment Centre are:
- To select the most suitable candidate(s) for a position or management-leadership level in an organisation.
- To determine candidate(s) managerial-leadership potential for various positions/levels.
The Objectives of a Development Centre are:
- To identify manager-leader development needs.
- To do management development planning.
Duration:
The normal duration for administering a Counselling Discussion is one hour. The normal duration for scoring and interpreting a Counselling Discussion is one hour.
