An Analysis Exercise is a paper exercise that simulates a situation where a manager is required to analyse the current situation in his/her department/business to identify strategies and actions that will turn the department/business around or to give it a competitive advantage.
The Assessment or Development Centre candidate/delegate is put in the fictitious position of the manager who has to do the comprehensive analysis, generate solutions, produce a business report on his/her findings and recommendations, and to do a presentation to the executive team of the fictitious organisation .
Purpose:
The purpose of an Analysis Exercise is to determine a candidate's/delegate's current ability to analyse a running business operation that forms part of a bigger company, to identify internal improvement needs in order to increase productivity, as well as to identify growth opportunities. Write a business report that will ensure that the improvement recommendations are actioned. Present a dynamic and convincing presentation to the executive team that will convince them to accept the recommendations.

An Analysis Exercise forms part of either an Assessment Centre or a Development Centre:
The Objectives of an Assessment Centre are:
- To select the most suitable candidate(s) for a position or management-leadership level in an organisation.
- To determine candidate(s) managerial-leadership potential for various positions/levels.
The Objectives of a Development Centre are:
- To identify manager-leader development needs.
- To do management development planning.
Duration:
The normal duration for administering an Analysis Exercise is six hours. The normal duration for scoring and interpreting an Analysis Exercise is one -and a half hours.
